Description
The core of the peculiar galaxy NGC 1275 as seen from the Wide Field/Planetary Camera onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. This image has enabled the discovery of about 50 massive globular clusters of stars seen here as blue dots. Globular clusters are normally composed of old stars and are among the oldest members in the universe. All the new clusters discovered in NGC 1275 are formed by young and hot stars. These young globular clusters may be the result of cataclysmic events which occurred in NGC 1275, such as a collision with another galaxy. The brightest dot coincides with the centre of NGC 1275.
