Description
Extrasolar planet. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) infrared image of planet TMR-1C (white dot, lower left) thrown out of a double star system (upper centre). This is the first direct evidence of an extrasolar planet. TMR-1C appears at the end of a 130 billion mile long filament of light. This may be light reflected from dust and gas left in the planet's wake, or a trail the planet has burrowed" through a dust cloud, allowing light from the stars to shine through. TMR-1C has a mass about three times that of Jupiter, and lies 450 light years away. Image made using data from the NICMOS camera on the HST by Susan Terebey of the Extrasolar Research Corporation, California, USA."
