Description
Hindu zodiac symbols. 19th-century illustration of zodiac symbols used in Hindu astrology. The nine inner symbols (forming a square) are the seven planets plus the Moon's nodes. The twelve surrounding figures are the signs of the zodiac. The outer 28 divisions are the lunar mansions. The title states that the symbols are 'from a Choultry [Hindu temple] in the southern part of the Carnatic [a region of Southern India]'. Artwork from a paper published in 'Transactions of the Royal Asiatic Society', read on 19 June 1830. Described in letters by Sir William Jones (1746-1794) FRS, to Samuel Davis (1760-1819) FRS, on the literature and science of India.
