Description
Computer-processed mosaic of 50 Viking orbiter images of Mars. The images have been mapped using an orthographic projection to simulate a view of the planet from space. The large circular white feature in the lower right is the Hellas Basin, covered with frost from the south pole. The Hellas Basin is about 2,000km across, and is the remnant of a large impact crater. The bright yellow/brown area in the top right is the Arabia Planitia. The images that were used to make this frame were taken in red, green and violet light with a surface resolution of 1km per pixel.
