Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) Great horned owl feather: shafts, barbs and barbules (Bubo virginianus). The great horned owl (Bubo virginianus), also known as the tiger owl, is a large owl whose range covers North America and extends south into Central and South America. Great horned owls are found in woodland and open fields including: grasslands, deserts, swamps, marshes, mangroves, and both rural and urban human settlements. Great horned owls feed on rabbits, rats, mice, voles, various birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Magnification: x55 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
