Description
Tawny owl (Strix aluco) amongst ivy. This owl is found in woodland and parks throughout Europe, North Africa and parts of the Middle East. It is the most common and widespread owl in Britain. It is a nocturnal predator, waiting for its prey on a perch before swooping down and clasping it in its talons, usually killing it instantly. It preys on small rodents, birds, which it may take in flight or from their nests, and insects. The female, which is the larger of the sexes, measures up to 45 centimetres in length. Photographed in May in Hampshire, UK.
