Description
Jupiter's rings. Galileo spacecraft image of the rings of Jupiter. The rings are made of fast, microscopic dust particles. The rings have a radial structure; dark, dust-free areas represent orbits which are perturbed by the gravitational influence of Jupiter's moons. Jupiter's rings are unstable, and the dust gradually falls towards the planet. The rings are constantly refreshed by dust which probably comes from the slow disintegration of the moons and moonlets that orbit Jupiter. Image taken by Galileo on 9 November 1996. The smallest features visible are 24 kilometres across.
