Description
Galileo National Telescope (TNG). Technicians work on the mirror support and active optics system of the TNG during its construction at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma, Canary Islands. The TNG's primary mirror (not seen here) is 3.5 metres in diameter, weighs 6000 kilogrammes and will be placed on an alt-azimuthal mount. Its active optics system (lower frame) uses 78 actuators (metal rods) to periodically adjust the mirror's shape to compensate for flexure during movement or temperature differences. The TNG will be operated by the Council for Astronomical Research (CRA) in Italy. Photographed in 1997.
