Description
Great Red Spot. View of the Great Red Spot (GRS), a large storm system in the atmosphere of Jupiter. This storm cell has been visible to earth observers ever since the invention of the telescope. It is about 26,000km wide in the east- west direction, and about 13,000 km wide in the north-south direction. Its appearance here is distorted due to being seen close to the limb. The GRS appears to be remarkable stable, even though the anti-clockwise winds inside it blow at up to 400 km/h. Other recent works suggests that the clouds in the GRS may be up to 50km higher than the surrounding cloud deck. This image was made by the Galileo spacecraft in June 1996.
