Description
Galilean world system. Diagram showing the Copernican heliocentric worldview, published in 1632 by the Italian physicist and astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564-1642). Galileo published this diagram in his book Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems. The diagram shows the Sun being orbited by the six known planets. The accompanying Latin text is a dialogue between Simplicio (SIMP, who represents the theories of Ptolemy and Aristotle) and Salviati (SALV, who represents the Copernican view). Despite this attempt to distance himself from views that were considered heretical, Galileo was put on trial by the Catholic church and ended his days under house arrest.
