Description
Frog bladder tissue. Light micrograph of tissue from the bladder of a frog (Rana temperaria), showing the smooth muscle network (pink). When on land, a frog's bladder acts as a reservoir to replace water lost by evaporation from the skin. The bladder wall is made up of an inner layer, the mucosa which contains transitional epithelium, the cells of which can stretch. The second layer is connective tissue, which binds to the mucosa. The lower layers consist of longitudinal, circular and transverse smooth muscles. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
