Description
Flood defence in Venice. Venice, the capital of Venetia province in north-eastern Italy, is built on 118 islands within a lagoon. It has canals instead of streets. Since the 1950s it has been swamped by periodic flooding, in part because it is sinking. In 1988 engineers began testing flood defence prototypes, and the construction of a sea gate to protect the city began in 2003.
