Description
Flooding in Venice. Venice, the capital of Venetia province in north-eastern Italy, is built on 118 islands within a lagoon. It has canals instead of streets. Since the 1950s it has been swamped by periodic flooding, in part because it is sinking. Construction of a sea gate to protect the city began in 2003.
