Description
Io. Five Galileo spacecraft images of Io, one of the moons of Jupiter. Dark areas correspond to volcanic hot spots, & may be active lava flows. The red, orange & yellow colours come from various forms and compounds of sulphur which cover most of the surface. The white areas are probably sulphur dioxide frost. These images were acquired by Galileo during 25-29 June 1996; the smallest visible features are 9-23 kilometres across. Comparison between these images and those acquired by the Voyager spacecraft in 1979 show that the pattern of volcanic activity changed in the intervening period.
