Description
Foot pad of a fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the arrangement of hairs on the foot pad of a Greenbottle fly, Lucilia caesar. The tip of the foot of the Greenbottle fly consists of a rounded claw (not seen) and a pad or cushion beneath it called a pulvillus. Here, tenent" hairs of the pulvillus are seen; they form a brush of tube-like glandular hairs, each with an L-shape. Tenent hairs secrete a sticky substance which enables the fly to land on smooth surfaces. For gripping onto rough surfaces, the Greenbottle fly uses the large rounded claw found at the tip of each foot. Magnification: x3,500 at 6x4.5cm size."
