Description
Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an unidentified species of dust mite in a sample of household dust. Every house contains millions of such creatures, living in carpets & furniture and feeding on the flakes of skin shed by their human landlords. It is estimated that the average double bed contains 2 million dust mites. The mite's body is in 3 parts: the gnathosoma (head region, left), the propodosma (carrying the 1st & 2nd pairs of walking legs) & the hysterosoma (locating the 3rd & 4th pairs of legs). Bacteria on the mite's body & surroundings are coloured gold. Manification: x48 at 35mm ,x96 6x7cm size.
