Description
False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the shaft of a human hair. Hair is a fibrous protein (keratin), which develops out of a tubular follicle located in the epidermis of the skin. The surface of the shaft is covered with keratin plates, or scales, (visible here) believed to reduce hair matting. Hair cells are dead except for a region within the hair or root bulb, at the base of the shaft, where epithelial cells divide to form new cells, pushing the older ones outward. Magnification: x440 at 6x7cm size.
