Description
Farewell to Earth. One of the greatest images of the space age, this enhanced-colour frame from the Galileo spacecraft shows the Earth and the Moon together in space. The image was made at a range of 6.2 million kilometres from Earth on 16 December 1992. The Moon is in the foreground, its 'far side' toward the spacecraft. The Earth is seen with clouds swirling over the Pacific Ocean, with Antarctica at bottom. This image was made eight days after Galileo's second gravity-assist Earth fly-by. It will reach its final destination, Jupiter, in 1995 at the beginning of a two year study of the Jovian system.
