Description
Early telephotograph. Photograph sent over telegraph wires of King Edward VII (1841-1910) of Great Britain. The telephotograph was invented in 1907 by the French inventor Edouard Belin. His device used light to trigger sparks to perforate a strip of paper, the diameter of each hole varying with the strength of the current. The strip is then passed through a cinema projector which produces an image of the transmitted subject on a screen. The method also allowed images to be sent by telegraph. Modern fax machines and photocopiers use similar principles. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The photographs date from the 1890s to the 1930s.
