Drone fly on flower. Drone fly (Eristalis tenax) seeking nectar from the flower of a lady?'s smock plant (Cardamine pratensis). Insects feeding on the nectar of flowers play an important role in transferring pollen between different flowers, a process called pollination. The pollen grains are transferred by touch from the anthers (yellow) to the hairs on the head and body of the insect. Nectar is a sugary fluid that is produced by flowers to attract pollinating insects. This fly is called the drone fly because it looks and sounds like a bee.
