Description
Diagram of the ATLAS particle detector. ATLAS is one of the experiments proposed for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator at CERN, the European particle physics lab near Geneva. ATLAS was designed to study 'p-p' (proton-proton) collisions. In common with other experiments designed for this purpose, the main features of ATLAS are: inner vertex detectors to study short- lived particles, Electromagnetic (EM) calorimeters to measure electrons and photons, hadronic calorimeters to absorb high-energy particles and particle jets, and an outer layer of muon detectors. ATLAS has a toroidal magnet with a 2 Tesla field.
