Description
Atlas vertebra (C1), artwork. This is the topmost vertebra in the spine, articulating with the skull to form the atlanto-occipital joint. Together with the second vertebra (axis, C2), this vertebra allows the head to be nodded and rotated. This is the vertebra's upper (superior) surface. The frontal (anterior) surface is at top, and the rear (posterior) surface at bottom. At left and right are the bony protrusions called transverse processes. Smaller protrusions on the anterior and posterior surfaces are called tubercles. The spinal cord passes through the lower part of the central gap (the vertebral foramen).
