Dermatitis exfoliativa of the hand and foot (Figs. 1 and 2) and pityriasis rubra (Fig. 3), historical medical illustration. Exfoliative dermatitis is redness and peeling of the skin over large areas of the body. Pityriasis rubra pilaris is a chronic skin disorder that causes patches of severely flaking skin, itching, thickening of the skin on the feet and hands, as well as itching and swelling of the legs, feet and other parts of the body.
