Description
Depressed and healthy brains. Coloured Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan of the brains of a depressed patient and healthy patient. The left side of the brain is seen, in external view. Colour-coded regions in red/yellow depict areas of low brain activity. At top, the depressed brain contains large areas in the prefrontal cortex (at left) and parieto-temporal (at right) with low activity. At bottom, the healthy brain treated for depression shows metabolic activity and blood flow has resumed in these affected areas. Depression is a disorder of varying severity resulting in sadness, hopelessness, and loss of concentration.
