Description
Cumulonimbus storm cloud. Cumulonimbus is the biggest and most powerful type of cloud known. It forms when droplets of water condense out of rising columns of moist air - conditions often associated with cold fronts. The cloud can grow up to 15 kilometres tall and typically has a vast, anvil-shaped top called a thunderhead. The interior is highly turbulent, with violent draughts rushing up and down. The energy and water that build up in cumulonimbus clouds are released in the form of lightning and torrential rain during a storm.
