Description
CLoud chamber photograph showing production of a proton & a tritium nucleus. An invisible gamma ray, produced by the 100 MeV synchrotron at Turin University, enters the helium-filled cloud chamber from right. It interacts with a helium nucleus to produce the proton & tritium nucleus. These particles have equal charge, but different masses: the tritium contains 2 neutrons & 1 proton & is therefore three times as heavy as a single proton. The massive tritium moves relatively slowly & therefore leaves a thicker track (top) than the lighter proton (bottom right). The distance between the central crosses is 16 cm.
