Description
Crossley Observatory. 19th-century illustration of the observatory built in 1887 in Bermerside, Halifax, West Yorkshire, UK, for British businessman and amateur astronomer Edward Crossley (1841-1905). Crossley built a private observatory on his estate, using a 36-inch reflecting telescope that he purchased in 1885. The weather conditions proved unsuitable for astronomical observations, and in 1895 Crossley donated the telescope to the Lick Observatory in California, USA, where it is still in use. Diagrams from 'Description of a New Observatory for a 3-foot Reflector' (June 1888, volume 48) in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
