Description
Crater Lake, Oregon, USA. This deep lake is remarkable for the clarity of its waters and its vivid blue colour. No rivers flow into the lake and most of the water is meltwater from the snow that falls on the lake and its shoreline. The crater is actually a volcanic basin (caldera) that was created when Mount Mazama collapsed in a volcanic eruption 7700 years ago. The lake is the deepest in the USA, at 608 metres, and the seventh deepest in the world. A volcanic cone is seen at centre, formed by continuing volcanic activity.
