Description
Crater Lake, Oregon, USA, satellite image. This lake is the deepest in the USA. North is at top. The crater is a volcanic basin (caldera), 1220 metres deep, that was created when Mount Mazama collapsed 7700 years ago in a volcanic eruption. The lake itself has a depth of around 610 metres. The volcano is still active and a small island has been formed by continuing activity on the east of the lake. image taken by the Landsat 7 satellite on 17 August 2000.
