Description
Combustion of sodium. Sodium burning in oxygen in a gas jar. This is an exothermic reaction (one that releases heat), as seen by the bright flame here. Sodium (Na) is a very reactive metal that must be stored under oil as otherwise it reacts with oxygen (O2) in the atmosphere to form the oxide. This oxide is also the product of the combustion reaction, seen here as white fumes of sodium oxide (NaO).
