Description
Jupiter's atmosphere. Coloured cylindrical map of Jupiter's atmosphere. Powerful jet streams create bands of coloured clouds in the planet's atmosphere, which consists mainly of hydrogen and helium with some trace gases that cause the colours. The bands are dotted with spots marking atmospheric disturbances. These spots include equatorial hot spots (bluish grey), thunderstorms (bright white) and the largest spot, the Great Red Spot (centre left). This image is a composite of 36 taken by the narrow-angle camera on board the Cassini spacecraft on the 11th and 12th December 2000 as it passed Jupiter on its way to Saturn. The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft was launched in 1997 to investigate Saturn, its rings and its moons.
