Description
Arteries in legs. Coloured X-ray angiogram of the upper legs showing their main arteries. The arter- ies appear as thin red lines (blue-green in top right), crossing the knee joints at the bottom. The main artery supplying the human leg is given different names according to its position. At the top it is called the femoral artery. This flows into the popliteal artery near the knee. Further down (not seen) the popliteal artery branches into the two tibial arteries. The large bones above the knee joints in this picture are the thigh bones (femurs). Blood vessels were highlighted in the X- ray by prior injection of an X-ray-opaque dye.
