Description
Brain's motor centre. Coloured three-dimensional positron emission tomography (PET) scan of the brain during a hand exercise. The exercise involved moving the fingers of the right hand. The front of the brain is at left. The scan shows the amount of glucose (sugar) consumption and hence areas of low (green & blue) and high (red & white) brain activity. The most active area (white) is the motor cortex in the cerebral cortex where movement is coordinated. PET scans use radioactively-labelled substances introduced into the blood to view metabolic activity in three- dimensions.
