Synaptic vesicles. Coloured high resolution scanning electron micrograph of synaptic vesicles in an olfactory (smell) bulb mitral cell. Synaptic vesicles (yellow spheres) are tiny sacs of chemical neurotransmitters in nerve cells. They are released at synapses, the junctions between nerve cells. When an electrical signal reaches a synapse it triggers the release of the neurotransmitters from the pre-synaptic cell. The vesicles burst through the membrane and cross between the gap (synaptic cleft) and bind to the receptor nerve cell. The neurotransmitters then cause an electrical impulse in the receptor cell.
