Description
Colour-enhanced image of Mars, a mosaic of 100 images made by the Viking Orbiters in 1980. The large yellowish area is the Arabia region. On the far right is the dark Syrtis Major Planum, a low- relief basaltic shield. To the left of Arabia is the Oxia Palus region, with dark streaks of material extending downward from many craters. Just to the left of centre of the frame is the large impact crater Schiaparelli. The bright white areas at lower right are covered by carbon dioxide frost near the South Pole.
