Uranus. Coloured Hubble Space Telescope near- infrared image of Uranus, showing clouds in its hydrogen & helium atmosphere. Clear atmosphere is blue, atmospheric haze is green, high-altitude haze is red and high haze over a clear lower atmosphere is purple. Uranus' south pole is green and its equator is purple. Five high-altitude clouds (red spots) near the right edge are almost as large as continents on Earth. An equatorial cloud at a lower altitude appears as a green spot. Uranus' rings and moons (white) are seen orbiting the planet. Image taken by Hubble's Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). date 20 November 1997
