Description
CERN analysis, 1972. Operator analysing a bubble chamber photograph at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland. Even with early computer technology, bubble chamber photograph analysis involved laborious and time- consuming tracing of particle tracks. Millions of images were analysed. This is an image from the Gargamelle bubble chamber that detected neutral currents in 1973. This type of particle decay was one of the most important discoveries ever made at CERN. Bubble chambers contain an unstable liquid that boils into bubbles along a particle's track. They are no longer used in modern particle physics research. CERN was founded in 1954.
