Description
CERN project announced. Swiss newspaper article in 1954 about the planned CERN project. CERN is the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland. The provisional CERN council was set up in 1952, and was ratified in 1954. Construction work also began in 1954, and the first CERN accelerator began operating in 1957. Many of the key discoveries in particle physics have been made here. Lev Kowarski (lower left, 1907-1979) built one of the first French nuclear reactors. Francis Henri Perrin (lower right, 1901-1992) was French high commissioner of atomic energy from 1951. They are watching as an airplane surveys the CERN site. Article from the L'Illustre newspaper.
