Description
CERN detector, 1986. This is the ALEPH detector at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, in Switzerland. This is the time projection chamber at the centre of ALEPH, covered with coloured film to protect it. The central hole is where particle beams collide. The collisions form new particles that radiate out into the chamber. The chamber normally contains wires that spark as the particles ionize the gas inside the chamber. Such experiments reveal the fundamental structure of matter. ALEPH was used on the LEP (Large Electron- Positron) collider, which began operating in 1989. LEP detectors helped to confirm the standard model of particle physics. CERN was founded in 1954.
