Description
A cartoon by Rowlandson, 1808, illustrating the final consultation with his doctors of a man suffering severe gout. Gout is a disease in which a metabolic defect causes inflammation of the joint capsules, resulting in swelling, redness & severe pain. It leads to crippling arthritis. It has traditionally been associated with excessive living", in particular overeating & overdrinking, and it is more common amongst men. The cartoon implies that perhaps wealthy over-indulgers and their vulturous physicians deserve each other, and if the disease doesn't get you the doctors and undertakers will."
