Description
'Terra Nova' and Captain Scott (1868-1912). Terra Nova was built in Dundee, Scotland in 1884 for the Dundee whaling and sealing fleet. She was bought in 1909 for the British Antarctic Expedition, also known as the Terra Nova Expedition. She was reinforced from end to end with seven feet of oak and sailed from England on 10 June 1910, under the command of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, a British explorer. Captain Scott and his team reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912, only to discover that a team led by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them by 33 days. On the return journey, Scott and his four companions became trapped in a blizzard and died.
