Description
Bonneville crater (upper centre) on Mars. This image was taken by the Mars exploration rover Spirit. Spirit landed in the large Gusev crater on Mars on 4th January 2004. After studying the area around its lander, it headed towards the Columbia Hills (upper right). Spirit has a twin rover called Opportunity, which landed on the other side of the planet three weeks later. The rovers studied rocks and soil, looking for evidence of water in Mars' past. They found much evidence that Mars had been wet in the distant past, raising hopes that some form of life may have evolved there. Image taken on 13th March 2004.
