Description
Black-crowned night heron. Young black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) in a tree. These birds are found throughout a large part of the world, except in the coldest regions and Australasia. Young birds are brown, flecked with white and grey whereas adult birds are white or grey with a black crown and back. The young become independent about 7 weeks after hatching. Like all herons, it wades in shallow water, catching its prey of fish and other water animals using its long beak. Photographed in Israel, in November.
