Description
Diagram of the ATLAS particle detector. ATLAS is one of four giant detectors being built at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva. ATLAS will have a diameter of 22 m, be as high as a 5-storey building, & weigh 7000 tonnes. To record the results of high-energy proton-proton collisons, its main features are: inner vertex detectors to study short-lived particles, electro- magnetic (EM) calorimeters to measure electrons and photons, hadron calorimeters to absorb high- energy particles and particle jets, and an outer layer of muon detectors. The LHC is due to start operations in 2007.
