Arterial disease. Light micrograph of a section through kidney tissue showing an artery (round, lower centre) affected by periarteritis (or polyarteritis nodosa). This is a disease in which small arteries become inflamed and damaged. The symptoms depend on the organs supplied by the affected arteries, but generally symptoms include fatigue, fever, loss of appetite & weight, and muscle and joint pain. In the kidney, it often leads to kidney failure. The causes of this disease are unknown. It can be treated with steroid drugs, but left untreated it can be fatal. Magnification unknown.
