Description
Antarctica in 1998, computer model. Image 2 of 2. This image shows Antarctica as it is in the modern era, 20,000 years after the peak of the last major glaciation (ice age). Less ice covers Antarctica and the sea around it in the modern era compared to 20,000 years ago (see image E215/508). Examples of this decreased ice cover include the smaller area of the Ross Ice Shelf (lower left) and the retreat of the ice covering the mountains of the Antarctic Peninsula (far left). The seasonal sea ice (much thinner than the massive ice shelves) is not shown here.
