Description
ALICE particle detection simulation. Cross-section through the ALICE detector showing a simulation of particle detection. ALICE is A Large Ion Collider Experiment" for the LHC (Large Hadron Collider), at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. It will surround part of the LHC, a 27-kilometre-long underground ring that will accelerate ion beams to collide head-on (seen at centre). The collision energy will create new particles that will decay into products that will be detected as tracks (yellow, the time projection chamber) and impacts (blue crosses, outer ring). Two other detectors are at upper and lower centre. The LHC should start operating in 2007."
