Description
African teak woody stem. Polarised light micrograph of a section through the stem of an African teak (Pericopsis elata) plant, showing its diffuse-porous xylem tissue. The xylem vessels (vertical, dark blue), which carry most of the water, are scattered throughout the xylem tissue. Some of the vessels' walls can be seen. These have a network of perforation pits that let water sideways if there is a blockage in the vessel. The multicoloured longitudinal cells are fibres, and fibre tracheids. Medullary rays can also be seen (blackish). Magnification: x6 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
