Description
Florissant Formation plant fossil. Fossil of a branch and needles from a Sequoia redwood tree from the Florissant Formation. This fossil bed, in Colorado, USA, dates to the Eocene some 34 million years ago. A volcanic eruption created conditions ideal for fossil formation, and thousands of fossils of extinct insects and plants have been found here. This specimen is part of the collections held in the Palaeontology Department of the Natural History Museum, London, UK.
