Description
Adenovirus structure. Computer artwork showing the protein structure of a human adenovirus (HadV) particle. Adenoviruses are the largest viruses not to have a protein coat covering their capsid. Here, one portion of the capsid has been removed to reveal the genetic material (DNA, spiral) inside. The capsid is icosahedral, having 20 triangular faces made up of regular arrangements of hexon capsomeres. Penton capsomeres make up the 12 vertices, with a fibre and knob structure (orange) protruding from each. Adenoviruses commonly cause infections of the upper respiratory tract and eyes.
